In 1957 the avant-garde poet, writer and artist, Jean Cocteau met Marie-Madeline Jolly and her partner Philippe Madeline in their workshop above Villefranche-sur-Mer and was inspired by the wild countryside surrounding the pottery and by the artisanal processes involved in the production of ceramics. Cocteau's ceramic designs are instantly recognisable with the economy of line seen in his drawings translated into clay with a minimum of fuss or adornment. Inspired by the ceramics produced by his friend Pablo Picasso, Cocteau created more than 300 ceramics between 1957 and 1963.
