Dame Laura Knight R.A

A figure and landscape painter, Knight studied under Wilson Foster at Nottingham School of Art where she met her husband, Harold Knight. They painted at Staithes, near Whitby and between 1908-18 lived in Cornwall. She exhibited widely in the UK and abroad, was elected an R.A. in 1936 and a Dame Knight in 1929. Knight frequently drew scenes from the ballet, circuses, racing, music hall and gypsy life and was a powerful colourist and prolific and strident draughtsman. She had a retrospective at the Upper Grosvenor Galleries in 1969.
