Paul Maze 1887-1979 Archived Work ()

Paul Maze

A painter born in LeHavre, France, who grew up in England. He moved to Perugia, Italy in 1914 to paint, rather than enter his father's firm. Maze served in the Royal Scots guards in World War I where he met and became friends with Winston Churchill. In 1918 Maze rented a studio in Paris becoming a notable member of the art scene. Eventually he settled in Treyford, Sussex, exhibited regularly in Paris, London and in America and his paintings are said to have a Dufyesque lightness of touch. His work is held by the Tate Gallery, Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and Glasgow Art Gallery.
